Chapter FIVE

Completion of the Boat

Dolph, Pen, and Sandy returned late in the evening, having enjoyed an excellent day and good sport. Sandy had a rope full of birds overhanging his neck, and Pen had a large wreath of birds wrapped around his body. Dolph was weighed down by birds, as well.

“Here you go, Norm. Here’s something to occupy your time in the kitchen. But, first, we need to get them cooked up and preserved for later eating.”

“But I got the rigging of the boat to finish and look after. You will have to do the cooking, my friend.”

The next day, Norman became Dolph’s assistant. During the time he was helping, he told his friend about his expedition the day earlier in the well. Although he found nothing, a secret still remained to be discovered.

During the next week, Dolph helped Norman, who handled the needle with much skill and helped complete the vessel's sails. Thanks to the recovery of everything associated with the hot air balloon, there were plenty of ropes and cables of good quality, which were all used.

Norm also made a flag that contained the red and white and blue of the United States of America. The colors were made from certain plants for the dyeing, which was abundant on the island. Norman did add one more star, the fifty-first, the star of “Omega Island,” for he considered the island as already united to the great United States of America.

It was raised on a long pole on the porch of the tree house, and our two adventurers saluted it daily.

The cold season was almost at an end. However, there was still lots of snow on the ground. It appeared to our two adventurers that the second winter on the island was to pass without any unusual occurrence when suddenly, while asleep soundly, at around five o’clock in the morning, they were awakened by Sandy barking up a storm. The wolfhound was not at the mouth of the well but at the foot of the basket down below. He jumped up and down on the basket as if he wished to be raised immediately. Pen was also uttering piercing cries.

“Sandy!” cried Dolph, the first to wake up.

Sandy continued to bark furiously... more so than before.

“What’s the matter now, Dolph?” Norm asked while walking over and looking down at a covering of snow that looked gray with the dim light of the moon. The adventurers couldn’t see anything. But, in the distance, they heard a yelping noise. By the sound of it, it was apparent the surrounding beach around the tall tree had been invaded by several animals which couldn’t be seen.

“What are they?” cried Norm.

“Wolves, jaguars, or maybe apes,” replied Dolph.

“They have nearly reached the base of the tree, the poultry yard, and the corrals where the sheep are!” exclaimed Norm.

“God, how in the world did they get over to our side of the river?” asked Norm.

“They must’ve crossed the bridge on the shore,” replied Dolph. “One of us must have forgotten to raise it up.
